The IELTS 2026 exam pattern has changed for both the IELTS Academic and General Training tests. However, the changes affect only the Reading and Writing sections of the exam.

The listening section evaluates your ability to understand main ideas, specific factual information, and the opinions/attitudes of speakers. It includes:
Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context.
Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context (e.g., a speech about local facilities).
Section 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context.
Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., a university lecture).
Tests reading skills such as reading for gist, skimming, understanding logical arguments, and recognizing writers’ opinions.
Academic Reading: Contains three long texts ranging from factual and descriptive to discursive and analytical, taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
General Training Reading: Features sections with shorter texts related to daily survival, work-related materials (job descriptions, contracts), and long texts of general interest.
Designed to assess your ability to write an appropriate response, organize ideas, and use an accurate range of vocabulary and grammar.
Academic Writing: Task 1 requires describing a chart, graph, table, or diagram in 150 words. Task 2 is a 250-word formal essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.
General Training Writing: Task 1 requires writing a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter explaining a situation in 150 words. Task 2 is a 250-word essay written in response to a point of view or argument.
Assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.
Part 1 (Introduction & Interview): General questions about yourself, home, family, work, studies, and interests (4-5 minutes).
Part 2 (Long Turn): You will be given a flashcard with a topic. You have 1 minute to prepare and up to 2 minutes to speak on it (3-4 minutes).
Part 3 (Discussion): Deeper, abstract discussion related to the topc in Part 2 (4-5 minutes).
