About PTE

Pearson Test of English (PTE) is dedicated to testing, assessing and validating the usage of the English language by non-native English speakers. The scenario-based exams are accredited by the Ofqual and QCA and administered together with the largest examining body in the world- Edexcel.

Launched in 2009, PTE Academic is endorsed by GMAC, the organisation that owns the GMAT exam. Nearly 6,000 organisations including colleges, universities, and governments across the world have recognized the PTE Academic. Computerised evaluation reduces the waiting time for the results to just about 5 business days after the day of the test. Actually, PTE is a much easier option than IELTS for a couple of reasons. PTE is less strict when it comes to ‘Writing’ assessment criteria. It is more lenient than the super-strict evaluation criteria followed by IELTS.

In the case of PTE, the number of questions, including essays, is limited. This makes it easy for students to prepare well for the ‘Written’ test.

How To Apply For The PTE Exam

The application process is very simple. It all starts with registration and booking a test date. The registration involves creating a Pearson account. On creation of the account, candidates will receive an email with log in details within 48 hours. Once the login details are available, the test can be scheduled for the desired date after filling in the application form and paying the fee. In the application form, candidates must fill in their name as it appears on their ID document. This is done in order to present the document on the day of the test.

PTE Academic Exam Format

Candidates will have to go to a Pearson test center. They will have to use a computer and read, listen to using a headset, and answer questions. The three main parts of the three-hour test are speaking and writing, reading, and listening. A 10-minute break is allowed between reading and listening sessions.

Speaking and Writing

Personal Introduction, Repeat sentence, Read Aloud, Describe image, Answer short questions, Re-tell lecture, Essay (20 mins), and Summarise written text.

    32 to 41 Minutes

Reading

Multiple choice (choose single answer), Multiple choice (choose multiple answers), Re-order paragraphs, Reading (Complete the blanks), Reading and writing (Complete the blanks) (10-minute break optional)

  • Duration
    45 to 57 Minutes

Listening

Summarise spoken text, Fill in the blanks, Multiple choice (Choose multiple answers), Highlighting the correct summary, Multiple choice (Choose single answer), Select missing word, Highlight incorrect words and Write from dictation.
